The History of Cingoli

The ancient centre of Cingoli was already inhabited 5000 years ago, from the Copper Age and into the Bronze Age. The date of its foundation remains uncertain, however, although it was probably related to the civilization of the Picenes. More information is available about the later Roman Age, which is attested by interesting archeological sites holding ruins of buildings and of an ancient surrounding wall, situated near San Lorenzo.
During the second half of the first century BC, Caesar's general Titus Labienus, a native of Cingoli, carried out important urban fortification and restoration works, whereupon Cingoli became a municipium under Augustus. It is known that the town was devastated by the Goths and Lombards at the beginning of the High Middle Ages. In the 12th century Cingoli became a free municipality and from the 15th it came under the control of the Papal State. In 1861 it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.
